It’s been more than 6 years since Doves took to the stage and while Jimi Goodwin sat this one out, to protect his health, the band put on a show nobody would forget.

Doves need no introduction, the band have released six albums, three of which have reached #1 on the UK Album Charts. Their most recent offering Constellations For The Lonely is the most expansive to date, featuring huge singles Renegade and Cold Dreaming.

There was some trepidation seeing Doves without their frontman, and how the show would change to accommodate, but Jez Williams did a stunning job commanding the room. In fact, his vocals were brilliant, and he’s found a great persona on stage.

Everything started in Birmingham with mesmerising projections inspired by their album cover, and the set included an almost studio feel. Choosing such intimate venues for a band of this size was smart, it gave a real opportunity for moments with the crowd. While interaction was expectedly minimal, there was an electric flow between the band and the beaming audience. This sentiment was echoed when Williams said: “We couldn’t do these gigs without your support”.

The setlist was bursting with hits, new and old including Pounding, Black And White Town and There Goes The Fear. Each track had its moment to shine, and newbie Renegade has really found a new home on stage, whereas Last Year’s Man was dedicated to Sarah Porter.

“What day is it? I think it’s Saturday, right?” Williams continues, before thrusting into another fan-favourite. And then acknowledging “Jimi’s here in spirit”.

Doves have a very special place in many people’s hearts and this returning tour, and especially Birmingham, was a beautiful display of the touch they’ve had on many everywhere.
