Nights Like These - ‘Neverland’ Review: Marr-inspired riffs with sharp lyricism

As alternative as you may think you are – fresh indie bands are no rare find. If Spotify was a city, every street corner has something new waiting for you; the excitement however comes from that new store that’s just opened. You know, the one that feels a little different – remaining currently undiscovered.
In today’s indie alt-rock landscape, those new finds that spark excitement are important – so it’s just as well Nights Like These are entering the scene, with their debut single.
When you crossover Marr’s jangly yet intricate riffs, with sharp observational lyricism reminiscent of the early 2000’s, you arrive in Neverland.
The Lincoln-based four piece is made up of vocalist Hannah Pywell, lead guitarist/producer Ben Walker, drummer Joe Pitchford and bassist Owen Bullas.

Taking inspiration from The Smiths, Nothing But Thieves, Radiohead and Paramore, Neverland narrates reflecting positively on a past relationship, and looking back fondly while equally finding comfort in moving forward. It’s full of honesty, memories and through it all, unity – in a similar fashion to Overcome by Nothing But Thieves.
Neverland is a song rooted in the indie wave of the early 2000’s, but has been injected with an abundance of freshness that doesn’t go unnoticed. Combining an unmistakably catchy chorus with interesting guitar work, particularly at the end, the single should be on your playlist already.
Finding juxtaposition in lines like “when the rain comes down from the Summer skies”, seems effortlessly simple, but shows a potential for deeper poetic songwriting in the future. Placing the emotional connotations aside, it’s one of many references throughout which solidify grassroots as a British band.
As a lead single for an upcoming band, it’s impressive – and unsurprising BBC Introducing have already picked it up on two occasions since it released.
Neverland is energetic, optimistic and confident – three traits that seem to echo through the band as a collective. Every member playing their part – trust us, crank up the volume.
You can see it already, a future spot at festivals, bursting into the lead chorus as crowds bounce. And not just to Neverland, but to potentially even bigger tracks yet to come – as Nights Like These already show a knack at writing none-other than bangers.
