Polly - Sea Girls
As Sea Girls lean further into melodic pop on their third record, Midnight Butterflies, Polly proves they’re pretty good at it. This track has everything you’d expect from Sea Girls, neat lyricism and earworm choruses. The album is their most focused to date, re-iterating the unrelenting graft these four boys put in constantly.
Pilot - Telebox
Another from their upcoming sophomore EP, When Night Turns Into Day, Pilot shines a light on their Night Cafe-inspired indie sound. There are elements of The Smiths and Two Door Cinema Club front and centre. It’s more full of colour and life than House On Fire, which we reviewed last month. This one deserves a spot in your playlist.
Queen - STONE
Not long now until STONE release their long-awaited debut album. Ever since the chaotic and fired-up LEAVE IT OUT, this is a band that’s been intent on expanding their sound. New track Queen is much more heavily influenced by 90’s rock and roll, think Foo Fighters. Bold chords and huge choruses. While the other two singles felt slightly watered down compared to previous efforts, Queen is a redeeming reassurance for the cohesion of the upcoming debut record.
Heart Shaped Rocket - IDLE WIVES
Need a big indie tune for your playlist? IDLE WIVES have brought the goods once again, this time on Heart Shaped Rocket. Describing their previous track as a ‘rock banger’, this one doesn’t fall short of the mark and only makes us want to see them live even more. Go on, give it a spin.
FUNEMPLOYED - Andy Goodwin
Andy Goodwin. The young new artist who’s on an enviable come-up, driven by social media, described already as an ‘indie provocateur’ by Rolling Stone. His style is charming, captivating and frankly, refreshing. Bringing back brit-pop, with a touch of Bakar, and embodying being quintessentially British, FUNEMPLOYED is one of six fun, addictive and cider-fuelled tunes on his debut EP. Not necessarily a pioneer, we’re not going to complain when these tunes live rent-free in our heads for days afterwards.
